4 Ways to Bring Spring Cheer to the Table

by Olly Mason

Whether it’s pasta night feature Nana’s family marinara sauce, or a simple Tuesday night roast, no matter what’s on the menu, it deserves a worthy presentation. While runners and tablecloths are a simple way to spruce up a table, we’ve put together a few spring-inspired ideas that will make every dining experience feel even more special. Here are four ways to dress up a table for spring.

1.  Showcase the Best of the Season

Florals — for spring? Groundbreaking, we know, but we just can’t help it. The colors of spring can make any dining occasion feel special, and if we eat with our eyes first, then creating a tablescape made of these flowers will surely get appetites started.

Daffodils

The contrast of vibrant, yellow petals and green stalks from daffodils perfectly captures the cheer of springtime. The sunny color works well as a complement to pastels, or as an exciting accent for neutral table themes.

Hyacinth

We’re not sure what to love more about hyacinth: its pom-pom of petals or their unique star shape. Available in white, pink, and violet, an arrangement of hyacinth on a table perfectly showcases the anthem colors of spring.

Tulips

If there’s any flower that represents the spring season, it’s the tulip. Its iconic bell shape is neat and sophisticated, making them ideal for upscale arrangements, but can easily work with fun and playful table settings. Just make sure to take advantage of all the colors available for the season!

Crocuses

Light, dainty, and with a pop of purple, crocuses are a celebration of spring’s airy joy. Since these are low-stem flowers, they can be used in smaller vases for minimalist table settings or to add just enough punctuation without getting in the way of dinnertime conversation.

2.  Bunny Origami Napkins

This spring table décor tip is for the kids (and those who consider themselves kids at heart). Creating origami bunnies out of table napkins not only brings seasonal character to the table, but it can be a fun activity for children, too. Here’s an easy step-by-step bunny napkin tutorial from the team at Delish.com.

If preferred, paper origami bunnies can be made too, like these bunny rabbits from The Spruce Crafts. To make each origami bunny extra special, try selecting craft paper in a different design for every child and create a fluffle of rabbits for the table.

3.  Perfect Your Green Thumb

Did you know moss is often considered a tell-tale sign that spring has arrived? The carpet of green can be found readily in lawns with humid soil, and when planted in a terrarium, the vivid color is a fun way to add festivity to a table. Co-author Joy Cho delivers a fun rundown of how to make a moss terrarium for your home.

While Joy suggests shopping local craft stores for containers to house moss, this tip is also a good way to use up leftover containers in the cupboard. Just make sure to strip the outside of any labeling (saturating the label in vinegar easily dissolves any adhesive). If you have children, this is also a great way to include collected items, such as rocks, shells, a favorite miniature toy figuring — the possibilities are endless!

4.  Celebrate the Flavors of Spring

Spring may have a bounty of flowers, but many foodies look forward to annual food harvest of the season. Luckily, there are a lot of fruit and vegetable choices to select from during this period of the year, and each can be used as a fruit-themed platter to celebrate the flavors of the season.

Try setting the table with a platter full of your week’s farmer’s market haul. Here are a few examples:

Apricot platter: Pair the sweet taste of seasonal apricots with the subtle sweetness of almonds for a classic combination of spring flavors. We’re also fans of apricots drizzled in local honey with the salty profile of feta. Additionally, the contrast of yellow and white are just another way to include seasonal colors to every dining occasion.

Cherry platter: Those who live in warmer areas will be able to enjoy cherries as early as May. These juicy berries are especially great alongside nuggets of dark chocolate, or a on a baguette slice with a shmear of cream cheese and drizzle of balsamic vinegar.

Strawberry platter: Since strawberries are mainly grown in the warm climates of California and Florida, that means they’re available as early as April. With a vibrant red color and classic taste, it’s hard not to enjoy the look and taste of a strawberry, and its profile works marvelously with mint, chocolate, and fresh basil.

Bonus tip: Next time you visit the market or farmer’s market, try picking up a container of pepper jelly. The unexpected punch of jalapeno is a surprising complement to a strawberry’s sweetness. Together with a soft cheese (such as cream cheese) and rustic crackers (we suggest matzo crackers), this springtime platter is a feast for the eyes and the palate.

Don’t forget to explore all the colors of spring, either! Carrots, radishes, and leafy greens are in peak season. Simply cut and arrange along the fruit of your choice to dress the table with even more colorfulness.
