How to Spruce Up Your Furniture for Spring Cleaning

by Pam Silvia

Wood

For best results, choose a furniture polish that is specifically crafted for your tables' and chairs' type of wood. Whether it's oil-based or wax-based, use the same polish for every clean to prevent smudging. Wipe along the grain, using a soft lint-free cloth.

Remove water stains (psst, coasters are your friends) by leaving some mineral oil on top of the affected areas overnight and buffing them dry the next morning.

Upholstery Fabric

It’s good practice to run a handheld vacuum over your upholstered furniture every week. To double-down on germs, use a liquid upholstery shampoo, taking special fabric considerations when selecting this product. And work the solution into the fabric with your vacuum’s rotary brush attachment!

Remember to keep your sofas and couches out of direct sunlight to keep the fabric from fading. For good measure, use a fabric protector spray to repel liquids and block stains!

Leather

Give new life to your leather couch with a DIY cleaner you can prepare with a ¼-cup of white vinegar and a  ½-cup of water. Steep a soft cloth in the solution to wipe over deep stains and go over the area again with leather saddle soap. Finally, rub your leather with a dry soft cloth.

Make sure to position your leather sectional away from all heat sources, and for regular upkeep, just use a feather duster and damp (not wet!) sponge.
